Who Is Jerry Nadler?
Jerrold “Jerry” Nadler is a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives. Nadler represents New York’s 10th Congressional District and serves as the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. His district includes Chelsea, Battery Park City, Greenwich Village, Soho, Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Hell’s Kitchen, Morningside Heights, Wall Street and a handful of Brooklyn neighborhoods.
Nadler grew up in New York and attended Crown Heights Yeshiva and Stuyvesant High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Columbia University and graduated from Fordham Law School.
First elected to public office in 1976, Nadler represented the Upper West Side of Manhattan in the New York State Assembly for 16 years. The legislator considers himself a strong, principled, progressive voice. He is a senior member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the New York Daily News called him “the liberal lion of the New York delegation.”
How Long Has Jerry Nadler Been A Congressman?
Nadler, a 14-term incumbent, was first elected to Congress in 1992 to represent New York’s 17th District. Redistricted from the 17th to the 8th, Nadler won a dozen more elections to serve constituents from 1993 to 2013. Another redistricting effort in 2013 and another string of electoral victories left Nadler representing New York’s 10th Congressional District from 2013 to the present.
Which Committees Does Jerry Nadler Belong To?
After two years as the Ranking Democratic member of the House Judiciary Committee Nadler assumed the position of committee chairman in 2019. Prior to leading the committee, Nadler spent several years serving on the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice as well as the Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet.
Nadler is also a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee where he serves on the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit and the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials.
Congressman Nadler is the founding member and vice-chair of the House Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LBGT) Equality Caucus. He’s also a member of the Congressional Arts Caucus, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus and the House Pro-Choice Caucus.

Impeachment
On September 24, 2019, the House Judiciary Committee voted 24-17, along party lines, to adopt a resolution defining the guidelines and scope for an impeachment investigation into President Donald Trump. About the impeachment process, Nadler said, “Some call this process an impeachment inquiry. Some call it an impeachment investigation. There is no legal difference between these terms, and I no longer care to argue about the nomenclature. But let me clear up any remaining doubt: The conduct under investigation poses a threat to our democracy. We have an obligation to respond to this threat. And we are doing so.”
Under the resolution, full committee and subcommittee hearings can be designated part of the impeachment investigation. Committee attorneys would be permitted to question witnesses and the President’s lawyers are allowed to respond to the proceedings in writing.
Uygghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2019.
The Senate passed the bill on September 11, 2019 and was subsequently taken up for consideration by the Judiciary Committee. The bill condemns “gross human rights violations of ethnic Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang, and calling for an end to arbitrary detention, torture, and harassment of these communities inside and outside China.”
Justice for Victims of Lynching Act of 2019.
The Senate passed the bill on February 14, 2019 and the Judiciary Committee has taken it up for consideration. The bill would “amend title 18, United States Code, to specify lynching as a deprivation of civil rights, and for other purposes.”
The Family Farmer Relief Act of 2019
The Family Farmer Relief Act of 2019 was introduced on April 11, 2019, and enacted after being signed by President Trump on August 23, 2019. A rare bipartisan achievement, the bill provides assistance to family farmers during agricultural, economic downturns.
In July 2019 the committee submitted a Report about the Humanitarian Standards for Individuals in Customs and Border Protection Act. As a response to news reports of poor conditions at CBP detention centers, the report demands CBP to provide adequate medical care, basic water, sanitation and hygiene, food and nutrition and shelter for detained migrants.

Nadler may face his toughest challenge in the primary election scheduled for June 23, 2020. Lindsey Boylan, a former Deputy Secretary for Economic Development, is running an aggressive primary campaign. According to Politico, Boylan outraised all other potential competitors in the second quarter hauling in $264,657 in donations.
Other Democrats include Amanda Frankel, Jonathan Herzog, and Holly Lynch. Thus far no Republican candidate has filed to run in the election.
In the 2018 mid-term election, Nadler defeated Republican Naomi Rosenthal with 82.1% of the vote. A popular incumbent, he won 78.1% of the vote in 2016 against Republican Philip Rosenthal and 78.7% of the vote in 2014 against Conservative Ross Brady and third party candidate Michael Dingel.
In Nadler’s district, during the 2016 Presidential election, Hillary Clinton received 52.08% of the vote while Trump received 44.85%.
