In today’s political climate, there is no shortage of causes to support. With the government either incapable or unwilling to tackle certain problems, there are a number of organizations whose mission it is to solve these problems.

Take a look at the top ten causes you can support this year and how you can support them with something as simple as a signature.

Top Ten Causes Of 2020

Combating Climate Change

Climate change is the greatest existential facing humanity, and it is being directly expedited by humanity. The carbon being emitted into the atmosphere through human use of fossil fuels is drastically warming the planet, threatening our very existence. As we approach climate tipping points, we will continue to see more extreme weather, extinct species, poisoned food, and some areas rendered uninhabitable, triggering massive refugee crises.

With the current administration’s environmental deregulation and refusal to acknowledge climate change as a threat, it’s more important than ever to support independent organizations fighting this.

Racial Justice

It won’t come as a suprise to you that systemic racism is still a big problem in America. From the moment coloninists began the Native American genocide to when the first African slave arrived on America’s shores in 1619 to present day, America has perpetuated government and societal structures that have systematically oppressed people of color.

The generational wealth that black families were robbed of by slavery was made worse by the suppression of their political power during the Jim Crow era, which carries on to this day in the form of voter suppression tactics.

There are numerous nonprofit efforts to support, but here are a couple.

Gender Equality

Women are underrepresented in Congress and positions of leadership in corporate America. Women make about 80 cents for every dollar a man makes, and black, latina, and native american women make even less. Aside from unequal pay, women face other barriers at the hands of sexism, whether it’s sexual assualt or discrimination in the workplace.

LGBTQ Rights

LGBTQ rights have come a long way in the past decade, with same-sex marriage being upheld by the Supreme Court and more civil rights protections put in place by the Obama Administration. Unfortunately, the Trump Administration has set the movement back with draconian measures like the Transgender Military Ban.

The Human Rights Campaign is doing excellent work to push this movement forward.

Women’s Reproductive Rights

Women’s right to choose was at the center of the 2018 midterm elections as acused sexual assaulter Justice Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court. This new 5-4 conservative majority raised fears the Roe v. Wade could be overturned in the future. Couple that with red states and passing anti-abortion legislation and the Trump Administration expanding the global gag rule, which defunds pro-choice NGOs, and there is an assault on on women’s reproductive rights.

Now is the time to support nonprofit organizations doing this work.

The Trump Administration’s infamous treatment of migrants at the southern border is no secret. President Trump and Stephen Miller’s policy of family separation and efforts to end the asylum process as we know it has traumatized thousands of migrants. Since not much can be done to stop this until a Democrat wins back the White House, supporting non-profit orgs pushing back on this administration is key.
