A Complete Breakdown Of Donald Trump’s 38th Unpresidented Week As POTUS

The President of the United States vs. We the People

As the weeks trudge along, I grow more disgusted with the President and impressed by the American people.

With every cruel Trump action, there is equal and opposite resistance. Not from our “representatives.” But from the American people.

Despite Donald Trump’s best efforts to distort reality, the incredibly vigilant American people see right through his every move.

When the President of the United States brags about causing health insurance stocks to plunge after rolling back Obamacare subsidies for low-income people, he’s really bragging about harming the most vulnerable Americans’ healthcare coverage.

When the President of the United States berates suffering people in Puerto Rico, he’s attacking Americans he sees as lesser humans.

When the President of the United States signs executive orders taking aim at women’s reproductive rights, we call it what it is: a war on women.

When the President of the United States tweets about challenging the broadcast licenses of media companies he disagrees with, we see it as an assault on our First Amendment rights by a wannabe authoritarian.

This President is transparently indecent, and the cruelty he has proudly worn on his sleeve will be rejected at the ballot box in 2018 and 2020 (With Robert Mueller’s moves this week, we’ll see if Trump makes it that far).

Donald Trump once called the media “the enemy of the American people.”

But we know who the real enemy is…

Here’s a complete breakdown of Donald Trump’s 38th week as POTUS:

38th Weekend (October 7–8)

Donnie Day Care

“Sometimes I feel like he’s on a reality show of some kind, you know, when he’s talking about these big foreign policy issues. And he doesn’t realize that we could be heading towards World War 3 with the kind of comments that he’s making…He concerns me. He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation….” — Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator Bob Corker (R-TN)

After weeks of hinting at nuclear war — from his tweet stating that North Korean leadership “won’t be around much longer” to his UN speech threatening to “totally destroy North Korea” — President Trump decided to keep raising Americans’ anxiety levels. In a photo op with military leaders last week, Trump made a very odd “calm before the storm” comment.

But Trump didn’t stop there. After President Trump undercut his Secretary of State the previous weekend, he continued his anxiety provoking tweets hinting at nuclear war on Saturday.

And on Sunday, he went after Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) who has on many occasions cast doubt on the President’s fitness for office.

And then, Corker struck back, channeling how Americans feel every morning, with perhaps the greatest clap back of 2017.

Bravo, Bob. Bravo.

But Corker didn’t stop there. On Sunday, he gave a revealing interview with The New York Times, not only expressing his concerns about Trump’s recklessness and how it could lead to World War 3, he stated that Republican leaders privately express these concerns and they also are aware of how much damage control those around Trump have to go through on a daily basis:

“Look, except for a few people, the vast majority of our caucus understands what we’re dealing with here,” he said, adding that “of course they understand the volatility that we’re dealing with and the tremendous amount of work that it takes by people around him to keep him in the middle of the road.”

This wouldn’t be the first time the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee got into a feud with a sitting President. In 1966, after having been a longtime ally of President Lyndon Johnson, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman at the time —Senator J. William Fulbright (D-AR) — split with Johnson after the announced the continuation of operation Rolling Thunder in Vietnam. Fulbright then began a campaign against the President’s war efforts and pointed out many flaws in President Johnson’s leadership.

We’ll see if Corker’s words translate to action and whether or now he’ll be remembered along the Fulbrights of history. A person who is willing to fully break with their party when they feel the country’s future is at stake. Only time will tell.

Meanwhile…

  • In the midst of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian ads on Facebook, an interview with the Trump campaign’s digital strategist Brad Parscale aired on CBS. Parscale discussed the Trump campaign’s strategy on Facebook, stating that they spent roughly $70 million on Facebook advertising leading up to election day. Expect to see this guy’s name more often in the coming weeks. Parscale is a subject of investigators who are looking into whether or not there was any coordination between Trump’s team and Russian operatives in the spread of propaganda — given the sophistication of Russia’s voter targeting.
  • Vice President Mike Pence appeared to have staged a walkout at an Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers football game. After flying to Indianapolis, Pence went into the game and sat for a less than an hour, and left after some of the players began to kneel. It was clearly staged, given the fact that his people told the press to wait in the van because it was probably going to be a short stop.

CNN estimated that this publicity stunt cost U.S. taxpayers $242,500. Ethics watchdogs are probing for specifics.

Given the recent scandals surrounding recently fired Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price as well as Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin’s use of hundreds of thousands of dollars in flights, this was further evidence of an administration that preaches of cutting costs while blatantly blowing through taxpayers’ hard-earned money. Donald “Can’t Control My Twitter Fingers” Trump provided further confirmation that this was indeed a stunt.

Pressure Cooker

On Monday, we got another palace intrigue piece on the White House and this one did not paint a reassuring picture. The Washington Post spoke to 18 White House officials who depicted an enraged President who is growing increasingly volatile. Trump is particularly frustrated with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson who reportedly called him a “fucking moron.” One source’s characterization of the President was particularly troubling:

One Trump confidant likened the president to a whistling teapot, saying that when he does not blow off steam, he can turn into a pressure cooker and explode. “I think we are in pressure cooker territory,” said this person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk candidly.

…This is exactly what we want from the man with autonomous control over our nation’s nuclear weapons (that was the highest form of sarcasm). This report wasn’t the last time there were leaks about Trump’s instability this week. Or nuclear weapons…

Meanwhile…

  • Lawyers for Russian Oligarch Aras Agalarov — who helped arrange the Trump Tower meeting with Donald Trump Jr., White House Adviser/Trump Sr.’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and former Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort — claimed the meeting was set up solely for the purpose of discussing the 2012 Magnitsky Act which imposed sanctions on wealthy Russians in retaliation for human rights abuses. Even if this were true, this would still be a meeting about easing Russian sanctions in the middle of an election where Russia was clearly tipping the scales towards the Trump campaign. But, as we know, this was not the case, given Trump Jr.’s emails which explicitly characterized the meeting as an opportunity to obtain damaging information on Hillary Clinton from the Russian government.

Donald Trump Jr.’s Emails Are Just The Tip Of The Collusion Iceberg

  • The full extent in which Russia interfered in our democracy continues to be revealed. The Washington Post reported that Russia also purchased ads across Google’s services, including youtube and gmail.
  • Remember all the talk of President Trump turning a corner with his dealings with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)? Well, the Trump administration released their “demands” for what was supposed to be a collaborative effort to provide relief for DACA recipients. It included the border wall.
  • Secretary of Defense James Mattis urged U.S. military leaders to be ready with military options when it comes to dealing with North Korea:

“Right now it is a diplomatically led, economic sanctions-buttressed effort to try to turn North Korea off this path,” Mattis said following a speech at the annual convention of the Association of the United States Army in Washington. “Now, what does the future hold? Neither you nor I can say, so there’s one thing the U.S. Army can do, and that is we have got to be ready to ensure that we have military options that our president can employ if needed.”

  • With California suffering from brutal wildfires with 10 deaths so far, Puerto Rico still reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Maria and the Jones Act waiver having just expired that day (which allowed non-U.S. shipping for a short period of time to increase aid), and 4 Green Berets having been killed the previous week in an ISIS ambush in Niger, the President of the United States took to Twitter to share healing words of unity and reassurance (please bear with my lame attempts at sarcasm. It helps me maintain sanity while I write these).

Our take, as always, was clear.

War On The Planet Of The Humans

President Donald Trump shakes hands with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt, before signing the Waters of the United States (WOTUS) executive order, Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, in the Roosevelt Room (AP Photo/Andrew Harnik)

After multiple hurricanes ravaged the United States and in the midst of a California fire that had, as of this day, taken at least 11 lives, injured dozens, and destroyed 1,500 structures, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt announced the end to Obama’s Clean Power Plan. CNN reports:

The rule was meant to limit carbon emissions from power plants by requiring states to meet specific carbon emission reduction standards based on their individual energy consumption. It also includes an incentive program for states to get a head start on meeting standards on early deployment of renewable energy and low-income energy efficiency. Under President Barack Obama, the EPA estimated the Clean Power Plan could prevent 2,700 to 6,600 premature deaths and 140,000 to 150,000 asthma attacks in children.

Pruitt proclaimed the “the war on coal is over,” making the argument that this would bring coal jobs back. Well, this is blatantly false. The reason there has been a reduction in coal jobs isn’t due to environmental regulations, it’s due to the fact that clean power is more in demand. For a party that claims to let the free market pick winners and losers, they can’t seem to grapple with the fact the fossil fuels like coal are on the way out.

This move was predictable. Pruitt is an infamous climate change denier and is best known for using his former position as Oklahoma attorney general to fight environmental regulations including the climate change-combating Clean Power Plan that he just rolled back.

Why is watching this administration’s moves on climate change so important? Because the long-term effects of our rapid global warming will be catastrophic. The rising of our sea levels, massive floods, stronger hurricanes, heat waves, droughts, poisoned food, an increase in terrorism, the list goes on. Last summer, the first mammal went extinct due to climate change. If these warming trends continue at the rate they are currently trending, large regions like North Africa and the Middle East could become uninhabitable by the end of this century, creating an unprecedented migration crisis. It is indisputable that climate change will affect every level of our existence.

But, our President believes climate change, the greatest existential threat to humanity, is a Chinese hoax…

  • Trump’s Health and Human Services Department labeled life as beginning at conception. Rantt’s Deputy Managing Editor Remy Anne reports:

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has released a draft of its strategic plan for 2018 to 2022. In a radical shift from the language used by previous administrations, HHS now defines life as “beginning at conception.”

The strategic draft released by HHS signals a turning point towards faith-based decision making in regards to healthcare policy. In a moment in our country’s history where progress seems to be under attack, roadmaps like this draft are of special concern. Women, the LGBTQIA+ community, and minority groups are disproportionally affected by the discriminatory laws enacted under the guise of religious liberty.

  • When responding to a question about Tillerson calling him a “moron,” President Trump asserted that he could beat Tillerson in an IQ test:

“I think it’s fake news,” Trump said, “but if he did that, I guess we’ll have to compare IQ tests. And I can tell you who is going to win.”

  • President Trump continued his attacks on the NFL on Twitter, and also took another shot at Jemele Hill who was suspended for alluding to a boycott of Jerry Jones’ Cowboys.

Trump took yet another shot at Corker. He should start to rethink this strategy given the fact he needs Corker’s vote for Tax reform, not to mention how crucial he will be concerning Trump’s Iran deal decision later this week.

He also signaled his incoming moves on Healthcare…

Donald’s Lesson In The 1st And 25th Amendments

Former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon stares at President Donald Trump during a meeting in the Roosevelt Room of the White House in Washington — Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

After a week filled with officials leaking to the press about Trump’s instability, this was the most damning yet. Gabriel Sherman of VANITY FAIR characterized Senator Corker speaking out as “an inflection point,” spurring others to speak out. The report depicted President Trump as “unstable,” “losing a step,” and “unraveling.” The piece claims that the loss of Senator Luther Strange, who he endorsed in the Republican Alabama primary, to Roy Moore has messed with Trump’s head. Trump has reportedly lashed out to his longtime security chief, Keith Schiller, venting “I hate everyone in the White House! There are a few exceptions, but I hate them!”

Chief of Staff John Kelly is reportedly only staying on the job out of a sense of duty to the country and is miserable. One claim from a source was particularly troubling:

“One former official even speculated that Kelly and Secretary of Defense James Mattis have discussed what they would do in the event Trump ordered a nuclear first strike. ‘Would they tackle him?’ the person said. Even Trump’s most loyal backers are sowing public doubts.”

This isn’t even the biggest bombshell in this piece. The report ends with a new development that states Former White House Chief Strategist and current Breitbart head, Steve Bannon, told President Trump several months ago that the biggest threat to his presidency wasn’t impeachment, but the 25th Amendment of the Constitution. Trump responded: “What’s that?”

What’s that you ask? We’ll fill you i,n Donnie. Most people know of the 25th amendment for its first three sections, which involve (1) the transfer of power from the President to the Vice President in case of death or resignation, (2) the nomination of a Vice President in case of a vacancy, and (3) the President voluntarily transferring power over to the Vice President. All 3 have been invoked in the past. The first three times the 25th amendment was invoked was the use of Sections 1 and 2 during the scandals of the Nixon Administration. The last three times were temporary invocations of section 3 when past Presidents had medical procedures. But there is a fourth section that has yet to be invoked.

Section 4 of the 25th amendment essentially states that if the Vice President and majority of the President’s cabinet, or the majority of either body of Congress, decides the President is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,” they can provide a written declaration that would then immediately remove the President from office and transfer power to the Vice President.

Afterwards, the President would send a letter claiming they are indeed capable, but the Vice President and the Speaker of the House can contest it within four days, then creating a 21-day window where 2/3 of both houses of Congress must agree that the President is unable to carry out their duties. The President can always send another letter claiming they are able, and the 21-day window would then reset. If 2/3 of both houses vote that the President is unable to perform the duties, they are out, and the Vice President is in.

Although this Section has never been invoked, it has been considered. Both times were during Reagan’s presidency. Once in 1981 after the assassination attempt, and another in 1987 when his aides claimed Reagan appeared depressed, inept and inattentive after the Iran-Contra scandal. Although Reagan didn’t reveal his condition until 1994, it is thought that these were early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

President Trump is clearly unfit to serve. The likelihood the Republican Congress will put party over country and invoke is yet to be determined, but rising by the day. Steve Bannon seems to think it’s likely. Could be why he jumped ship to focus on propping up other candidates. Gabriel Sherman’s piece ends with this line:

According to a source, Bannon has told people he thinks Trump has only a 30 percent chance of making it the full term.

Meanwhile…

  • Speaking of being unfit to serve, NBC News reported that this past Summer, Donald Trump urged for a tenfold increase in the U.S. nuclear arsenal. This was reportedly at the same July 20th meeting in the secure room at the Pentagon called “The Tank” where Trump compared the strategy in Afghanistan to renovating a restaurant in New York City. It was this meeting that led Tillerson to call President Trump a “fucking moron.” And rightfully so. President Trump disputed this report.

And then went on to speak like a wannabe dictator, challenged news companies that report anything negative about him.

Of course, the President can’t do this. Not only would it be unconstitutional, FCC commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel confirmed it just can’t be done given the fact the government doesn’t license televisions networks.

But this didn’t stop Trump from doubling down.

Our take.

Republican Arizona Senator Ben Sasse seems to agree…

  • The House Intelligence Committee is probing Cambridge Analytica’s involvement with the Trump campaign as part of their Trump-Russia investigation.
  • The U.S. flew 2 Air Force B-1B bombers over the Korean Peninsula as the U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier Ronald Reagan conducts drills with Japanese warships in waters Southwest of the Korean Peninsula. This came after President Trump held White House meetings with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton was also seen entering the White House as well. China’s state media called for caution — “War on the Korean Peninsula would be catastrophic, and dialogue remains the best option.”

A Declaration Of War On America’s Healthcare System

President Donald Trump (AP/Andrew Harnik)

This is the day Donald Trump definitively proved, beyond a reasonable doubt, that he doesn’t give a damn about the American people. It’d be difficult to argue otherwise. I’ve written about his every move, but his cutting of the Obamacare cost-sharing reduction subsidies…this one was a direct shot at the most vulnerable.

Trump started the day with an executive order that, according to Reuters, could violate federal law governing employee benefit plans. Reuters reports:

Trump signed an executive order on Thursday aimed at letting small businesses join nationwide associations for the purpose of buying large-group health plans that are not subject to coverage requirements of the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare.

Industry experts said Trump’s order could ultimately enable such associations to purchase insurance from states with the fewest regulations. That would undermine Obamacare, former Democratic President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare law, which Republicans have failed to repeal.

Several healthcare and employment law experts said if Trump’s plan moves forward, states could argue the federal government had overstepped its authority in violation of the U.S. Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), a law that governs large-group plans.

But President Trump didn’t stop there, he went on to do what many have been vocally opposed to for quite some time.

According to an August Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report, cutting this subsidy will actually cause over a million to go uninsured, hike premiums by 20%, and raise the deficit by $194 billion. 18 states have already sued Trump for halting these payments. This sent a jolt into the Healthcare market. Analysts have predicted this may even cause insurers to jump ship.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and America’s Health Insurance Plans released a joint statement expressing opposition to the move:

“This action will make it harder for patients to access the care they need. Costs will go up and choices will be restricted. These benefits help real people every day, and if they are ended, there will be real consequences.”

Having spoken to people who may lose coverage for the care they desperately need to survive and folks whose premiums will spike due to Trump’s moves on Thursday, we did not hold back in our take. Lives are at stake. These are real people and Trump just can’t see them as anything other than numbers in his game. Trump has literally held the American people’s healthcare hostage in order to leverage a bill to be passed by Congress. We at the Rantt Editorial Board have yet to call the President an evil man, but when he targets the most vulnerable Americans for the sake of a nonsensical, ego-driven crusade to dismantle his predecessor’s legacy, we had a hard time finding another way to describe this heinous act.

Meanwhile…

  • Chief of Staff John Kelly ran the White House press briefing amid reports that he was unhappy with his position and could be replaced. Kelly asserted that he is indeed here to stay…For now.
  • President Trump continued his streak of indecency by taking to Twitter and quadrupling down on his attacks on Puerto Rico, not only repeating his assertions that Puerto Rico is to blame for their suffering in the aftermath of a natural disaster, this time he went a step further, warning that federal aid won’t be around forever…

This juxtaposes what Pence said last week in Puerto Rico:

“We’re here for the long haul. We’ll continue to provide support. We will continue to move resources in this community.”

Once again, Trump’s lack of character is as clear as day. We see you.

  • Finally, the House of Representatives passed a $36.5 billion aid package for Puerto Rico. The vote was 353–69. It now moves on to the Senate.
  • The death toll in the California wildfires had risen to 23 as more cities were evacuated.
  • The Trump administration withdrew from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, which, as The New York Times put it, is “popularly known for its designation of World Heritage sites, is a global development agency with missions that include promoting sex education, literacy, clean water and equality for women.”
  • Trump’s lawyers may offer Special Counsel Robert Mueller an interview with the President himself sooner rather than later, Politico reported. The reasoning may be that either way Trump will be interviewed, so might as well do it now before Mueller has gathered enough evidence to ask more informed questions. This shows that Trump’s lawyers may fear what Mueller will find.

The President Of The Virgin Islands Degrades America’s Credibility

President Donald Trump (AP)

On Friday, President Trump refused to re-certify the Iran Nuclear Deal, imposed new sanctions on Iran labeling their Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, and put the fate of the deal in the hands of Congress. A move that Politico revealed, was largely pushed along by Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley. Also, former ambassador John Bolton played a role. This explains his visit to the White House this week. Tillerson has stated the U.S. intends to remain in the deal.

The Iran Nuclear Deal was put in place by President Obama to keep their nuclear proliferation in check. They’ve been complying with the deal, so why decertify? Well, because it has Obama’s name on it and Trump doesn’t care about consequences. Decertifying would kick this back to Congress for 60 days where they can decide whether or not to impose new sanctions on Iran. Even if they re-certify, the act of kicking it to Congress will reduce America’s credibility in future negotiations, not just with Iran, but with other nations. Why would North Korea want to strike a deal with the U.S. if the President may, at any moment, discard the deal because he’s pissed that day?

Meanwhile…

  • After signing executive orders that would cause Obamacare to spiral into a broken mess, President Trump sent out tweets calling Obamacare a broken mess

  • Special Counsel Robert Mueller interviewed Reince Priebus, further proving that he is honing in on obstruction of justice in the firing of James Comey

Special Counsel Robert Mueller Is Closing In On The White House

  • Trump’s former Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort was back in the news. A $26 million loan reportedly exchanged hands from a company linked to Manafort and a company linked to Russian Oligarch Oleg Deripaska. This makes Manafort and Deripaska’s relationship a $60 million one, given his $10 million a year contract with Deripaska. The contract was part of a plan to assert pro-Russia influence in U.S. politics and lasted from 2006–2009. Manafort moved into Trump Tower in 2006
  • President Trump attended the Values Voters Summit. This was hosted by the Family Research Council which the Southern Poverty Law Center has designated as an anti-LBGT hate group. Here are a few of the highlights:

The Virgin Islands are a U.S. territory…

Over the weekend, seemingly unsatisfied with the case he’s been making that he doesn’t care about the harmful consequences of actions, President Trump took to Twitter to brag about harming American companies, and by extension, the American people depending on those companies for healthcare coverage.

And despite his actions doing the exact opposite, like I outlined earlier, President Trump claimed that they will decrease costs and benefit millions.

To the vulnerable Americans out there…I know it’s tough to wake up and see the President of the United States essentially brag about harming your healthcare coverage. And to the people of color, LGBT, women, low-income people, and empathetic Americans who have chosen to stand in solidarity, your vigilance will pay off. This won’t last forever. Your relentless resistance will translate to organized action, and in future elections, voter turnout.

If this presidency has accomplished anything, it has revealed the Republican Party’s true nature and more importantly, it has awoken the American people to the power of their voice.

Hatred and indecency had to reveal itself in order for it to be defeated.

Hold on. Keep fighting. Maintain hope. We will overcome, and the United States will rise stronger and more effective than ever before.
